Massive Multi-Vehicle Pileup Caught on Video

A snow storm in Forest Lake, MN, caused a massive multi-vehicle pileup this morning that was caught on video.

The storm that caused all the havoc produced from 6-7 inches of snow, and the temperature quickly plummeted once the storm subsided heading rapidly for the nasty side of zero degrees Fahrenheit.

Car Smashes into Grocery Store Hitting Baby Carriage – Video

OMG!…This action packed video shows a car smashing into a Publix grocery store and mowing down five adults and a baby carriage in the process.

Most of the action takes place within the first six seconds of the vid. About 50-60 seconds into the video you will be able to see the car cruising through the store still taking out store displays along the way. At 1:45 into the video several shoppers and store employees lift up one side of the car to free an 83-year-old man who was pinned under the vehicle.

Although you cannot see the details because everything happens so quickly, this video depicts a violent scene of five luckless victims and a baby carriage being wiped out by the speeding auto, which was traveling about 50 miles per hour according to witnesses. Why would anyone be driving 50 mph in the parking lot of a Publix grocery store?

Do not watch this video if you are squeamish.

Ten people including a baby in the baby carriage were injured during the accident which occurred Saturday, April 14th, in the central Florida town of Palm Coast.

The driver, 76-year-old Thelma Wagenhoffer, was charged with careless driving after she drove her 2004 Toyota Camry through the entrance of the Publix grocery store plowing her vehicle into a crowd of people and store displays.

Investigators determined that the car’s brakes were working properly, which may rule out mechanical problems as a cause. However, the car is a Toyota Camry, which has a history of autos accelerating by themselves. This video may prove that Toyotas still have problems with sticking gas pedals. Amazingly, it is difficult to believe that no one was killed in this incident, especially the baby in the baby carriage.

Neighbors claim that Wagenhoffer is normally a good driver, and that she would not answer her door to speak to reporters.

“Yeah, its bad…it’s a bad deal…its really got her tore up,” said one neighbor who declined being identified. “She never said a word. I don’t think she knows what happened to tell you the truth. I think she just had a bad experience, bad accident, bad day.”

Runaway Truck Crashes through Saloon Wall Pinning Patrons to Bar – Video

In a freak accident near Saint Paul, MN, a runaway pickup truck clipped a utility pole and then crashed through the wall of Gordie’s Place, a local saloon, pinning patrons against the bar. The 51-year-old driver suffered some sort of health condition which caused her to lose control of her vehicle.

“The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office,” Randy Gustafson, spokesman for the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, said in a statement. “However, initial indications are [that] medical reasons appear to be contributing factors to the cause of the crash.”

Whatever the cause, the results of the accident are a bit scary, as evidenced by the following video:

As the bar owner, Tom Cossak said, “there should have been people killed,” especially considering how fast the truck was moving when it entered the bar. After watching that video, I would not want to be one of the folks pinned against the bar. It is a miracle that no one died.

Base Jumping Crash Caught on Video

Our video today shows Jeb Corliss, one of the world’s best base jumpers, crashing into a ridge on January 16th on Table Mountain in South Africa as his jump goes horribly wrong.

The video is embedded so that it will begin at 1 minute and four seconds into the vid, which is the beginning of Corliss’ ill-fated jump. We recommend that you click on the full screen icon in the lower right corner of the vid to enable the best shot of the crash.

Because it is YouTube technology that allows us to pop into the video at a specific time slot, it may not work properly on all web browsers. If that happens, then simply paste the link into your browser’s URL address and watch it on YouTube.

And yes, Corliss surprisingly survived the mishap suffering only a broken leg, a broken ankle, some broken toes and bumps and bruises while spending the last five weeks in a South Africa hospital.

Corliss’ injuries are minor compared with what might have occurred. The fact that he survived at all is quite amazing considering that he hit the ridge at 120 miles per hour. Of course, Corliss fully intends to continue jumping once his injuries heal.

“The only reason I’m getting better is so that I can jump again,” Corliss said describing his motivation for healing his injuries.  “That’s what I do.  There’s absolutely nothing in this world that’s going to stop me from jumping.”

HBO Sports with Bryant Gumbel filmed the crash, and Corliss has posted his version of the accident at Jeb Corliss – Grounded. ABC News’ Nightline has also presented the best version of the accident I have seen on its show. I will post that link when it becomes available.

Judge Frees Koua Fong Lee Due to New Evidence

A Minnesota judge Thursday freed Koua Fong Lee, a motorist jailed for vehicular homicide after a June 10, 2006, car crash that left one adult and two children dead. Lee claimed that he tried to stop his 1996 Toyota Camry but said his brakes failed to respond and his accelerator stuck.

Lee, 32, was sentenced to eight years in 2007 and has served two and one half  years of that sentence.

The judge ordered a new trial claiming new evidence put the verdict of Lee’s first trial in doubt. Plus, after the judge’s ruling, Ramsey County prosecutor Susan Gaertner said she would not request a new trial or pursue the case any further. That makes Lee a free man innocent of the original charges against him.

The new evidence consisted of the myriad of problems late model Toyotas have had with both breaking and acceleration. In addition the judge cited that Lee’s previous attorney made mistakes that may have influenced the outcome of the trial.

Despite the fact that most of the mechanical problems have been with newer Toyotas and that expert witnesses were not able to agree whether or not Lee’s 1996 Toyota had acceleration problems or braking problems, the judge ruled that the evidence was sufficient to warrant a new trial.

The following video is a local TV station report of Lee getting his freedom.

Upon his release Lee stated before cameras, “When I slept in the cell, sometime I’d dream and I’d wake up and still (be) in the little room, but now my dream come true.”

Just hours before the judge’s ruling the Ramsey County Attorney’s office offered Lee a deal under which he would go free, but would remain a convicted felon and would lose his driving privileges for 10 years. Lee declined the offer.

Part of the new evidence that the judge considered was that 11 witnesses had offered their testimony regarding rapid acceleration of 1996 Toyota Camrys. Mr. Lee was wise to pass up the prosecutor’s offer.

Dad Saves Baby’s Life in Near Death Accident – Caught on Video

Andrew Leich miraculously saved his 4-month-old son Hayden’s life when a driver, who had suffered a heart attack at the wheel, lost control of her vehicle and, while traveling around 45 mph (70 km/h), plowed into a group of pedestrians on the sidewalk in Penrith, West Sydney, Australia.

The vehicle sent most of the pedestrians flying, but it pinned Andrew and Hayden to the front of a real estate broker’s office, as shown in the photo above. Andrew and Hayden are highlighted inside the circle in the photo.

Leich says he will never forget the miraculous moment when he saved his son. “I don’t have to be reminded of it, it’s more or less the first thing that comes up in my mind straight away. It just goes ‘ting’ first thing (when I awake in the morning),” he said.

Leich had no time to think and said he reacted instinctively to protect Hayden as the car bore down upon his family. Moments before the car hit them, Leich had managed to turn slightly shielding Hayden from the power of the collision.

“I can take the hit, that’s what I was thinking, I can repair, there’s no way he’s gonna repair,” said Leich. “So I thought if they hit the back of me, that’s fixable. He’s not fixable.”

Michael Ball, the owner of the real estate office the vehicle crashed into was also on the sidewalk beginning to enter his office when the incident unfolded. As he saw the vehicle hurtling toward him he jumped back out of its path, thereby saving himself, but he also witnessed the entire accident. “It was amazing that he actually didn’t let go of the child at all,” said Ball. “The whole time he had his son in his arms and just didn’t let go.”

Leich’s instincts were correct because Hayden survived the ordeal without a scratch.

The accident occurred on July 2, 2008, but the video was just released this week. Leich was walking with his son, his mum, Caroline Leich, and his father, David Leich.

In the video Leich states that after he realized his son was unharmed, he immediately worried about his parents. In the photo above inside the highlighted circle, Leich’s mum, Caroline, can be seen flying by after being struck by the runaway car.

Both Caroline and David Leigh were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but they have since recovered after spending months in the hospital. Leich and the car’s driver’s injuries were not critical in nature, and they too have recovered.

Leich now feels happy every time he looks at his son. “He’s lucky to be here, but in a way… he wasn’t meant to go that day, neither was mum, neither was dad,” he said.

Cat Tries to Revive Injured Mate – Video

Two cats were busy being cats and doing what cats do in the Kızılsaray district of Antalya, Turkey, when one of them was accidentally struck by an automobile. That is normal everyday activity, but what happened next was most unusual and was caught on film by a passerby.

In the video the passerby shot you will see the male, white cat apparently trying to revive the female, black cat, his mate, and showing remarkable emotion for an animal.

Please watch:

Naturally people attempted to intervene and help the black cat, but the white cat put up a fuss and would allow no intervention. By the time a veterinarian eventually made it to the scene, the black cat had died.

Who knew that cats were able to show such human-like emotions and behavior, assuming that is what actually occurred here?

How Texting While Driving Ruins Lives

It seems that virtually all age groups are texting, so all age groups are texting and driving too. The following video graphically shows why texting while driving is illegal in 19 states in the US and will eventually be illegal in all states

The video was made for and with the assistance of the Gwent Police Department, located in Tredegar, Gwent County, South Wales, which is approximately 150 miles west of London in the United Kingdom.

The video is a trailer for a 30 minute film on texting and driving called “COW” that was commissioned by the Gwent Police Department and was produced and directed by Peter Watkins-Hughes, who is an award winning former BBC producer. Hughes also lectures at the Documentary Film & Television department at the Newport School of Art, Media and Design in Wales.

The video was released in July, 2009, and immediately went viral world-wide. Unfortunately, many teens have commented on YouTube, where the video is hosted, that teens click the vid off after aboout 30 seconds. Hopefully, more of them will watch the entire video, and, just as importantly, perhaps their parents will watch it too.

YouTube states that the age groups most watching the video are females between 45-54 and males between 35-54, so at least the parents seem to be watching.

Please be forewarned that the video is graphic in nature.

Please watch:

More information on Peter Watkins-Hughes can be found here.

The YouTube site states that “State of the art digital special effects were utilised to show the impact of what would happen inside the car during impact.” The vid’s special effects were created by Zipline Creative which is also located in the United Kingdom.

The YouTube site for this vid is here, and it  has been viewed over 3.2 million times thus far.

Please do not text while driving. It is just as dangerous as drunk driving.

Cops Who Screw Up – Videos

Cops who screw up! One would think there would be so many possible videos on that subject that you could almost post non-stop forever. But this post is going to stick to cops driving their squad car improperly to the point where they end up in very hot water.

Our first vid is about a police car chase that goes wrong, as far too many of them do, it seems. The cop in this first video actually goes through…well, maybe you should just watch it:

If you think a police officer driving his squad car through the brick wall right into a building is bad, this next video isn’t any better. This cop runs into a man in a wheelchair while driving his squad car. Watch:

In grammar school in basic first aid class I was taught: do not move someone injured in an accident. The man in the wheelchair could have further injuries to his spinal cord and not know it. So what does John Law do? He picks the man up and returns him to his chair. John Law flunks Rescue 101.

More Funny Automobile Bloopers and Misadventures – Videos

When folks get behind the wheel these days, look out! Whether it is because of stupidity, carelessness, drunkenness or cell phone texting, people are screwing up more and more these days when they hit the roadways.

Although many of the accidents that are caught on film result in tragedy, we prefer to dwell on the funny incidents because humor is a lot more fun than a broken neck.

VW micro buses were all the rage back in the 1960’s and ’70’s. They have been around since then, but they simply have not been all that popular. In the late 1960’s they were a status symbol, a sign that you were a part of the hippie generation because many of the flower children drove across the USA in a VW micro bus.

They were usually painted in psychedelic colors and were major players in the automotive experiences of the hippie generation.

Volkswagen did not forget how popular their micro bus was back then, and a few years ago the company previewed a concept car based on that micro bus from the ’60’s and ’70’s.

If the above photo is any proof, the concept car made it all the way to the production line. Yes, it appears from this photo that the bus is back.

The design makes perfect sense in these days of high priced gasoline and is certainly a sign of the times. You can be sure this new VW only sips the petrol.

Almost everyone who sees this photo says it’s cute. That means that women drivers would be the natural market for this vehicle. You could watch for more of them at a VW dealer near you. But the problem with that is that Volkswagen insists that they know nothing about the vehicle.

Even in Germany, the closest vehicle you can find similar to this car is the VW Fox, which is nowhere as cute as this car is. If you like it, call Volkswagen and tell them you want to buy one. If they built one, they must have built others that are out there…somewhere.

Now, for our first video–you know what kids do. They build a ramp that they can use to jump things with their skateboard, and naturally they leave it in the street in front of their house. Kids will be kids and they don’t understand that bad things are likely to happen when something like this is left in the street.

The driver never noticed the skateboard ramp in the street and…well, watch and see for yourself:

Oh too bad! The car did not actually tip over. But, we all know that this scenario could have gone a lot worse.

Just imagine how the driver must have felt. He’s tooling along, probably talking on his cell phone, maybe late for an appointment, and, if he is like most drivers, his mind is anywhere but concentrating on what’s right in front of him. Suddenly his car rides up on only two wheels just like in a stunt car show. Wouldn’t that be a shocker!

In the next vid we have an Evel Knievel wannabe let his buddy drive a car over his forearm because that’s not really gonna hurt is it? Naah! Of course not!

Well, I cannot understand how that hurt the kid’s arm. Let’s see…drive a 3500 pound vehicle over a human arm? That shouldn’t hurt, should it?

Wait till this kid gets to school to tell his buddies what he did. “You drove the car over your arm? No Way!”

“Yes, Way! Check out the video pal. See! And I’m still alive. Of course, my arm’s in a cast, but so what! Now I’m an Internet hero.”

Well, we all know that a broken arm is a small price to pay for immortality on the Internet. I can see the high school class year book now. “Mike Smith: Let Jonesey drive a car over his forearm. Most likely to become the next Evel Knievel.”

Okay! I feel guilty about the car in the first video not tipping over so I’m going to try to make it up to you…maybe.

In the next video what could possibly go wrong. The driver is entering a fenced location through a steel gate, and people enter premises like that through steel gates every day. What could go wrong?

What indeed! Watch!

Lady! Next time try to remember to keep the shiny side up!

We have saved the best for last, at least in our opinion. In our last video, a young woman attempts to fill her car with gas, which is usually a simple procedure. But today it isn’t.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Laurel and Hardy movies, this is the type of situation that Stan Laurel and Ollie Hardy used to get themselves into constantly. Most of their humor consisted of sight gags very similar to this one.

I have watched this video several times and I still laugh out loud every time I see it.

Did you notice at the very end of the clip she is still struggling with the hose trying to bring it back again to the wrong side of the car. If only she would turn her car around, all would be fine, but she doesn’t seem to understand that.

Funny Automotive Bloopers and Misadventures

Our video depicts a female bus driver who unwittingly sets out to experience an off road adventure, but she is not in an SUV. No, she is driving a bus, but it is still an adventure and it is definitely off road.

When I first watched the video of this woman bus driver, I suspected that it was fake. The bus must drive right over one or two cars parked in the parking lot for this video to be authentic, and that alone screamed of unlikely authenticity.

However, after watching it several times, I noticed that other vehicles which were in the first part of the video, when the camera was aimed where the bus was headed, were also in the second half of the video. Those vehicles were the same color, shape and size plus their location was the same too.

Sadly for the bus driver, this video appears to be real. But it probably no longer matters to her because it is unlikely that she is still working at that job. Would you keep her on after seeing her drive in that video?
