Story of Fictitious Dog “Leao” still Draws Admirers

A story in 2011 about a Brazilian dog stirred the emotions of millions worldwide with sentiment so raw the anecdote went viral immediately. The tale spun a fictitious yarn about a pup named “Leao” who was so loyal to her former owner that the dog sat vigil for days at graveside after the owner’s funeral.

At the time everyone thought the story was real, with Leao’s chronicle revealed to be a hoax only a few weeks later. Despite that, Leao’s folktale still tugs at the heartstrings of net surfers today, 4 1/2 years later.

People stumble across the narrative to this day and are touched by the loyalty of such an admirable dog. In fact, folks still often ask about her, remarking “Whatever became of that incredible Brazilian dog Leao?”

Leao’s reported owner was Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, who supposedly died in Brazil’s 2011 catastrophic landslides caused by severe flooding. It is not even known if Santana was a real person or simply the figment of someone’s deceptive imagination.

Leao’s narration was carried by numerous media outlets including McCafferty Himself, and even CNN. The hoax revelation was first carried by the Malaysia Sun, but far fewer news organizations bothered to report the hoax. They were far more interested in the emotionalism of the original article. That is probably why so many folks still believe the story today.

Most of us want to believe that such a tale is true because it reaffirms the landmark loyalty that dogs have for their owners. Unconditional love even after death–now that really is a tale worth telling.

The dog in the photo actually belonged to Rodolfo Júnior, a grave digger who worked at a cemetery in Teresopolis, Brazil. Júnior stated that his dog often accompanied him to work, and he did not know who took the photo of his dog at the newly dug, unmarked grave.

There were so many dead from the mudslides in Brazil that year that they resorted to burying people in an assembly line fashion, which is why they are so many fresh graves in the photos. It was reported that 655 died in Teresopolis alone.

Perceiving human like emotions in animals is not new. There are many videos on the Net of such things. Look at a video we have of a cat that appears to be trying to revive its mate by massaging its chest.

These type of tales seem to give us that warm fuzzy feeling inside, even if it’s 4 1/2 years after the fact.

More Dramatic Tsunami Videos from Japan

We have added a couple more Tsunami videos from the recent catastrophe in Japan. These are two of the most descriptive we have seen. My friend Jaguar from the MixxingBowl.com alerted me to the first video, and I want to thank the Jag for that.

It shows the tsunami in its early stages as it just begins to to hit the town of Miyako, in Iwate Prefecture, about 120 miles North of Sendai, which was the city closest to the epicenter of the earthquake that shook Japan last Friday.

That quake, initially reported to register an 8.9 magnitude on the Richter scale, has now been upgraded to a 9.0 magnitude.

Although the tsunami begins modestly in this video, its violence rapidly grows into the ferocious and destructive beast that we have seen in other videos of the tsunami.

This video is courtesy of Russia Today and from ANN TV in Japan.

*****

Our second video is also from ANN TV and the language is only in Japanese; however, little translation is needed. The vid begins with dry streets in the town of Kamaishi, also in Iwate Prefecture about 20-25 miles south of Miyako and maybe 100 miles north of Sendai. Both cities are 80-100 miles north of the Oshika Peninsula.

Soon one can spot a trickle of water traveling down the street, a trickle which quickly grows into an absolute torrent of onrushing destruction.

If you watch the second video in full screen, it seems like you are right there on high ground as the destruction of the tsunami unfolds all around you:

Loyalty Even After Death

Leao continues to sit at the grave of her owner, Cristina Maria Cesario Santana, who died in last week’s catastrophic landslides in Brazil. She has remained at the graveside for two days straight with no sign that she will give up her vigil.

Leao proves that dogs are loyal to a fault.

There are so many dead from the mudslides in Brazil that they have resorted to burying people in an assembly line fashion. I believe there were 655 dead just in Leao’s town alone.

Editors Note: Story of Brazilian dog “Leao” turned out to be a hoax. See followup story. Updated 7/3/2015.

Wacky Weather: Rare Red Tornado, Narrow Escape from Flooded Car

Some wacky weather provided some unusual videos last week.

This rare red Colorado tornado is one of four tornadoes that touched down near Denver at the start of the Democratic National Convention. This one was captured on film near Parker, Colorado.

The geological nature of the Rocky Mountains inhibit the formation of many tornadoes, although other parts of Colorado frequently receive their fair share of twisters.

The red twister arrived a day after a rare tornado touched down in the mountains west of Denver. That tornado tossed campers around and slightly injured four people at Witcher Cove Campground, The Denver Post reported.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Park County Coroner Sharon Morris told the newspaper. “And I’ve been here 25 years.”

The red Colorado soil plus the length of time the twister remained in the same area made for an unusual video:

In Apache Junction, Arizona, flood waters tripped up the motorist in the next video and almost dragged her and the child with her under water.

For some unexplained reason, this woman drove her car right into the flood waters, endangering a small child in the process. A couple good Samaritans aided in their dramatic rescue.

The woman and child were very, very lucky. That car almost completely submerged just before it hit the bridge. The weight of the engine was pulling the vehicle down into the water, but the back end was held up, perhaps because it was lighter than the front. This might well have ended tragically.
